Jessica Bell

Meet the newest addition to our lululemon lab artist series; Jessica Bell. I was lucky enough to sit down with Jessica and discuss the meaning behind her beautiful installation ‘Not An Island’.

“My work in general is a tandem consideration of place and of materials. When The Lab asked me to work on a piece for the Artist Series I was assigned the theme ‘nurture’. I knew that the piece would hang in a physical place that would bridge the gap between the creative community of the lab and a particularly dynamic intersection of the greater community of Vancouver as a whole; the piece I constructed for you was intended to speak to that relationship.
The work is titled Not An Island consists of 5440 square inches of seams in the form of three stretched textile assemblages, measuring a total of 40″ in height and 136″ in length. It is made of fabric I hand-screen-printed, remnants I have salvaged from old clothing and household linen and some new fresh textile as well. There is so much potential in this assembly of materials for discussing place and the relationships within it. The graphic reads as three graphic images of habitation floating singularly side by side. I imagined these as depictions of landscape and of community; while they appear to float independently at first glance, they are in fact tied to one another by innumerable points of connection. Vancouverites are very reverent of their geography; it is my hope that Not An Island it is a piece that can speak about place in a way that considers our landscape as being much more than land.”
